Learn About Our History

Although our Church building has been a centre of worship on Hollybush Lane since 1882, the history of Christians worshipping in this parish is much older. This congregation has its roots in a gathering that started in a farmhouse kitchens in Woodhall Lodge, and later in the farmhouse of Hyde House.

In 1861, Lord Salisbury had built what was known as the ‘Mud Hut’ Church, on the edge of where the playing fields are now, on Homestead Lane. The only piece of furniture was a small desk serving both as prayer desk and pulpit. The wood from this desk is now a part of the Reredos (wooden screen behind the altar) in the Lady Chapel of St Mary Magdalene – a tangible connection to those who prayed in this place even before the church was built.

The Church of St Mary Magdalene

St Mary Magdalene was built in 1882, and dedicated in 1883 as a chapel. The architect was Eustace Balfour, brother to the prime minister and nephew of Lord Salisbury. In 1928, St Mary Magdalene became the Parish Church. The church has always been a church for the local people of this community, and we continue to be here for all, in trouble and in joy.
