What is Ascension Day?

Ascension Day is one of the most significant, yet sometimes overlooked, celebrations in the Christian calendar. Observed 40 days after Easter Sunday, it marks the pivotal moment when the resurrected Jesus Christ was taken up into heaven, concluding His earthly ministry. The biblical account, primarily found in Acts 1:9-11 and Luke 24:50-53, describes Jesus blessing His disciples before being lifted up, with a cloud hiding Him from their sight. Two angels then appeared, promising His eventual return in the same manner.

As part of the Church of England, we at St Mary Magdalene in Welwyn Garden City recognise Ascension Day as a crucial event. It signifies the completion of Jesus's saving work on Earth, His exaltation to the right hand of God the Father, and the transition towards the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, just ten days later.

Why is Ascension Important for Us Today?

The Ascension isn't just a historical event; it carries profound theological significance and ongoing relevance for our faith and lives as Christians today:

  • Jesus Reigns: The Ascension affirms Jesus's ultimate authority and sovereignty over all creation. He is now seated at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us (Romans 8:34).
  • Promise of the Spirit: Jesus's departure was necessary for the sending of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter and Guide He promised to His followers (John 16:7). The Spirit empowers the Church for its mission.
  • Hope of Eternal Life: Jesus's ascension gives us hope in His promise of preparing a place for us (John 14:2-3) and the eventual resurrection and ascension of all believers.
  • Call to Mission: Before ascending, Jesus gave His disciples the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20), charging them (and us) to make disciples of all nations. His ascension empowers this mission through the Holy Spirit.
  • Foundation for Worship: Understanding the Ascension enriches our prayer and worship, reminding us of the glory and power of the Christ we follow.
